THE CO-MISSION...
Q: How did the Secretariat commission come about?
KITTY: Caroline was at a show displaying her painted sculptures (some sculpted by me). I was home working on Bronzes and getting ready for a show in Colorado, "Sculpture in the Park." Caroline called and said the Secretariat people were interested in having us produce a sculpture of Secretariat, painted by Caroline and sculpted by me. What can I say? I'm thrilled and honored to be asked to be involved with this piece. Secretariat is a legend in "my" time. I hope I will do him justice. I'll give it my all. I'm kind of speechless as a matter of fact. My head is still "poinging" off the ceiling. What a challenge!!
CAROLINE: I was in Kentucky for a show and had quite a few pieces for sale. A very pleasant man approached my table and asked about the horses on display. He was interested in the sculpting and painting process and I explained how Kitty and I work together. A horse is sculpted originally from clay, a mold is made, an edition number is determined, and then the horse is produced and painted. His questions became more and more specific, and then with a smile he said, "let me introduce myself, I'm Leonard Lusky the President of Secretariat.com. "It didn't take long - about 1/2 a second - for that to register with me and I blurted out "Secretariat! Oh, wow! I saw him win the Triple Crown, I was only 10 years old and remember staring with my mouth open as I watched him win! It was such a thrilling moment, I'll never forget it!" We began talking some more and discussing the possibility of having Secretariat sculpted. To put it mildly, I was thrilled, (again!).
